Rosalie and Mayer’s Housing Story. Rosalie is a single mother of two, one of whom has multiple needs and requires 24/7 care. Mayer has a rare genetic disorder, Coffin-Lowry syndrome, and is in a wheelchair, yet they don’t live in a wheelchair-accessible house. In this short documentary, Rosalie asks for adjustments to be made to her house so she can continue to provide the care that her child, Mayer, needs as he grows older.
As a survivor of domestic violence, Rosalie also talks about how her stressful housing situations has added to her existing trauma, and that of her children.
This story is not unique. Many public housing residents feel like they’re not heard, even when they try to advocate for themselves. Residents with disabilities are even more likely to suffer housing stress, and in the current housing crisis this is made even worse, as options are further limited.
UPDATE: Gabrielle helped Rosalie find a new property, still close to her child’s school, but with wheelchair access! 🙂
