Richmond Station is not fit for purpose. As the gateway to Victoria’s sports and entertainment precinct, and a transport hub for 10,000 workers daily, it’s the 6th busiest train station in Melbourne. Yet it hasn’t seen any upgrades for more than 60 years.
Platforms are narrow and struggle to handle surges, especially during major events at the MCG. The surrounding areas are dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, as crowds of commuters spill out around the narrow footpaths of Swan and Cremorne Streets.
We call on the government to upgrade Richmond Train station and the surrounding areas to:
- accommodate growing number of people that use the station
- be fully accessible and compliant with legislated disability standards, including the installation of lifts
- allow access from all gates at all times, to improve connectivity and flow
- improve pedestrian and cyclist safety with better footpaths, crossings, shared zones and connections to the sports and entertainment precinct
The lack of accessibility and the condition of this station is unacceptable.
