The Victorian Greens have renewed calls for a rent freeze as Labor re-packages an old lacklustre announcement for a rental dispute body, saying that it goes to show how little Labor cares about supporting renters.
The rental dispute resolution body was first announced more than a year ago and funded through legislation supported by the Greens several months ago.
Following a week of Labor announcing incentives for property investors and developers, the Greens have called out Labor for insulting renters by recycling an old announcement.
The Greens spokesperson for Renters’ Rights, Gabrielle de Vietri said that Labor clearly just wants to appear like they’re doing something but if they really cared about renters, they’d end unlimited rent rises.
Quotes attributable to the Victorian Greens Renters’ Rights spokesperson, Gabrielle de Vietri:
“The rental crisis is breaking people. People are having to make the impossible decision between paying for food and paying their rent and recycling an old announcement is the best Labor can do?
“The truth is, until unlimited rent rises are illegal, landlords will still have the power to hike up the rent as much as they like and force renters out of their home.
“After a week of announcing handouts for developers and investors, the best Labor could do for renters is recycle an old announcement – they really are the party for landlords and developers.
“The Greens will keep fighting to freeze and cap rents so everyone – not just developers and investors – have a secure, affordable place to call home.”
