What I’m fighting for

I want to make sure everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home, take on the big corporations who are destroying our planet and create a society where everyone is safe to be themselves.

I am an artist, activist and the
Greens MP for Richmond.

I’ve lived in the Richmond electorate for over 20 years.

I love Richmond and our shared commitment to diversity and fairness.

I’m here to make sure everyone has a safe and affordable home. To fight for climate action. And to stand proudly with my LGBTIQA+ community.

SAVE LIVE MUSIC🎤🎸🎹

⭐️Add your name to the petition at the link in my bio.

Music venues in Victoria are under enormous pressure. On top of rising rents and the cost of living, insurance for live music venues has been hiked up astronomically, putting the local music scene at risk. Too many venues have already had to shut their doors.

Our local live music venues are crucial to nurturing multiple and evolving cultures and we want to make sure that our venues and local music thrive into the future.

I’ve written to the State Government to step in and underwrite live music venues’ insurance through the government’s Victorian Managed Insurance Authority.

While I was doorknocking at the public housing towers in my electorate I was shocked by how many vacant apartments there were.

Labor’s housing system is so broken that they let public homes sit empty while others have to sleep on the street.
...

Yesterday was a day I’ll remember for a very long time. From morning to afternoon we stood with public housing residents as the parliament decided the fate of an inquiry that will be such an important step in saving our public housing towers from demolition and privatisation.

When the upper house voted to support the inquiry, there were hugs and tears all around up in the gallery where residents were watching from above.

This fight is far from over but our pressure is so important and it’s working. Labor may hold the power but together we are a massive community of thousands of residents and their neighbours who care deeply about putting people before private profits.

There’s so much more to do. Want to get involved? Send me a DM.

I’ll never forget Wren Pleasant. I had the privilege of meeting her when she spoke at the rental crisis inquiry last year.

Wren blew me away with her sense of purpose and clarity. Her words come to me often when I am writing speeches and planning the next steps seeking justice for renters.

Earlier this month, Wren died after battling depression.

I’m deeply sorry that this world failed you, Wren. My promise to you and all renters out there is this: I will not give up until everyone is safe and secure in their home.

Watch until the end to see an excerpt of Wren’s statement at the rental crisis inquiry.

Our local venues are folding at an unprecedented rate - astronomical rents and ridiculous insurance hikes have spelt a death sentence for live, local music. The Victorian Government has got to step in to make sure we don’t lose our local music scene.

I’ll be really sorry to@thebendigo go. Get in touch if you’re a live music venue to tell me how you’d like me to advocate for your survival.
