Stop Labor’s property giveaway at Fitzroy Gasworks.
The Victorian Labor Government is giving almost 3 hectares of public land in Fitzroy to property developers for private profit.
When the plan for the redevelopment of the old Fitzroy Gasworks site was announced at the 2018 and 2022 elections, our community was promised public, social and affordable housing. But now in the midst of a housing crisis, they are putting developer profits before the basic right to a home. The new plan has no clear commitment to public, social or genuinely affordable housing.
We now know that in May 2023, Labor quietly ditched social housing at 15 projects across the state, amounting to 1551 fewer homes for those most in need. We knew Labor was putting property developer profit before people, but now we have the receipts: $62.6M saved to shelve 120 social homes.
Now is the time to act before the contracts are signed, due to happen around August and September 2024.
Write to the Premier to stop the contracts

To the Premier of Victoria
(CC: Minister for Development Victoria)
I urge you to halt the signing of developer contracts for the Fitzroy Gasworks site. I stand with my community to call for public land to be used for public homes and public good. I can’t stand by silently while this prime land in my neighbourhood is handed over to developer for private profit.
In the middle of a housing crisis, this plan makes no sense. Why would you scrimp on $62.6M to shelve 120 social homes and then turn around and allocate $450M to demolish 600 homes in 3 public housing towers? Victoria is losing money and public homes.
This plan does not add up economically, does not reflect what the community wants and commits more and more Victorians to homelessness.
Premier, I urge you to please stop demolishing and privatising public housing. Retain what is already here, build more here in Fitzroy where we want it and stop looking after your property developer mates.
Regards – you
The state government should not be giving up public land for property developer profits in the midst of a worsening housing crisis and while over 120,000 people wait for public housing.
I’m joining the community to call on the government to deliver:
- 100% public housing
- More greenspace
- Community facilities
