Public housing residents have the right to a safe, secure & affordable home.
But the Victorian Labor Government wants to demolish all 44 public housing towers in our state and sell off the land to private property developers for massive profits.
This is a cash grab that will kick 10,000 residents out of their homes, tear communities apart and make the housing crisis worse.
There are over 120,000 people on the public housing waitlist and there are more and more people experiencing homelessness.
In a housing crisis we need to build more public housing, not demolish what we have.
Most of the housing that developers will rebuild on these sites will be expensive private apartments, not affordable public homes.
Economists, architects, planners and housing experts agree that Labor’s plan to demolish public housing is disastrous. The towers were built to last and residents are fighting to stay.
The Greens want the Labor Government to stop the demolition and privatisation of public housing. We want to protect communities, keep this land in public hands and build more public homes.
Less than a decade ago we stopped the Liberal Government privatising the Fitzroy estate, and before that we stopped the Kennett Government from demolishing and privatising the Fitzroy, Richmond and Prahran towers.
Together, we’ve saved public housing and we can do it again.
