RICHMOND PUBLIC HOUSING: STOP THE DEMOLITION

Public housing residents have the right to a safe, secure & affordable home.

The Victorian Labor Government has announced that the demolition and privatisation of public housing in Richmond has been brought forward, starting with the homes at 139 Highett Street, 111, 119 and 127 Elizabeth Street, 6 and 8 Anderson Court and 1-5, 7 and 9 Williams Court.

This is part of their plan to demolish all 44 public housing towers and displace over 10,000 residents.

We understand Labor’s plan is to demolish the Richmond buildings in 2026 and for a private developer to build mostly private, expensive housing on this land. The new buildings may include some community housing, but no public housing. Community housing is more expensive and less secure than public housing.  The Government has not guaranteed that existing residents will be able to return.

We know this will be distressing news for many of you. We are here to support you. You have rights.

  • You do not have to relocate voluntarily.
  • You have the right to an interpreter and a lawyer.
  • You do not have to accept a property that is not appropriate for you.

The Greens believe in retaining, repairing and reinvesting in our existing public homes. We are fighting to keep communities together and to refurbish the towers so that everyone can thrive where they already call home.

The Greens want Labor to immediately stop this demolition and privatisation of public housing. We want to protect communities, maintain existing public housing, and build more.

Many of your neighbours have told us that they want to stay in their home and keep their community together. The Greens have been working hard in Parliament and with the community to stop the demolition of public housing, and to push Labor to build more new public housing.

If you want to stay in your home, we will support you.

If we come together now, before they tear apart the community, we believe we can stop the Labor Government moving you from your home and destroying public housing.
