Each morning in Clifton Hill / Collingwood, hundreds of school children cross a busy 6-lane freeway exit at the intersection of Gold Street and Alexandra Parade. With Clifton Hill Primary School to the north and Gold Street Child care to the south, this crossing is the most direct route for many, but is not fit for the volume of pedestrian, cyclist and car traffic. Despite traffic lights and crossing supervisors working hard to ensure everyone’s safety, many cars speed through the red light putting safety and lives at risk.
This intersection could be made safer for school children and pedestrians by
- Installing a speed and red-light camera
- Better signage for drivers approaching the crossing
- Road paint to delineate the crossing
- A safer pathway on the road and on the median strip to allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross safely at the same time
The signatories ask the Department of Transport to make this crossing safe.
